Individual Therapy

Individual therapy is the foundation of therapy.  This is where the client and the therapist sit down one on one and the therapist helps the client resolve whatever distress is in the client’s life.  For many, this may be a challenge.  Many clients don’t know what they should be saying or if they can trust the therapist.  It is the therapist’s responsibility to make the client feel comfortable.  Unless there is an immediate crisis, the client is never pushed to talk about things they are not ready to discuss.  Instead, the therapist works to create a therapeutic alliance with the client before anything too personal is shared.  The idea is for the therapist to create a very safe place where the client can come without fear of judgment or criticism, so that the client can speak freely about the issues that brought them into therapy.  The therapist will never insist on speaking to anyone else about the client’s situation unless the client requests it.    Sometimes it is beneficial to speak to other people in the client’s life to gain a better understanding of how the client reacts to intimate people in their lives.  Adding a second perspective optimizes the chances for success.  However, it still remains the choice of the client whom they wish the therapist to speak to.  Therapy can be very successful without the therapist ever meeting anyone else in the client’s life.
